Make Sure Your Makeup Is As Fresh As You Are!

Carefree Challenge

In honor of the #CarefreeChallenge I thought I would post some ideas that you may not think about. It’s important to keep your makeup and beauty products fresh, and bacteria free! How often do you wash your makeup brushes? It’s an oh-so-boring task that is SO important to keep your complexion clear! I wash my brushes (a thorough soap and water washing) once a week, but use makeup brush cleansing spray after every use.  I like Sephora’s Daily Makeup Brush Cleaner. ELF makes a great budget friendly alternative that works well.

Have you thought about how fresh your makeup is? How long does it last, with normal usage? (I’m talking normal daily usage, not the testers in Sephora and ULTA!) Here’s a list, so you can be sure you aren’t keeping your makeup around longer than it should be! Keep in mind there are those of us that hoard collect makeup and we like to keep the pretties for longer, and not use them. Just sayin’.
Your products will always last longest when you have clean, sanitized hands and use the proper tools. Whether that is a makeup spatula, clean brush or sponge, qtip or a spoolie. How long do your products last? Here’s some general guidelines from a Pro Makeup Artist:
powder products - 2 yrs
liquid products - 1.5 yrs
cream products - 6 mos - 1yr
twist up products(lipstick, eyeliner) - 1 yr
mascara - 3 mos

I know I am guilty of keeping lipsticks and glosses for several years, not that I wear the same color daily! What about you, do you follow something along those guidelines?

I only wear mascara and eyeliner so I’m totally guilty of not changing my stuff out for a year. Soo bad too I know.

My makeup brushes are disgusting. I rarely wash them because I forget but after reading this I will hurry and wash mine before using them tonight.

We always pay so much attention to what’s in our food, so I’m loving paying attention to what’s in (and on!) the stuff that goes on my face, too! Clean brushes and sponges really make a world of difference. I blogged about it myself - with a full guide to makeup expiration dates - here: http://cominguprosestheblog.com/spring-clean-makeup-bag-whats-mine/

Okay, jettisoning all liquid products as I type this. I wondered why all of my eyelashes fell off.

So good to know! I’m good about washing my brushes every week, but horrible at throwing out makeup. This post was a good reminder that just because I still have lipstick in the tube, doesn’t mean it’s still ‘good’. Gigi

Great tips! For my foundation brushes, I have 7 identical brushes (the $1 ELF variety) so I can use a fresh one each day and not have any bacteria going onto my acne-prone skin. Then I wash all the brushes once a week, because I hate washing brushes and would rather do it less!

Awesome tips! I’m a makeup horder and I must confess I do have quite a bit of LE items from 10yrs ago, although I won’t use them I keep them because of the beautiful product cases!

  • Heather Pfingsten

Great tips! I am thankful to have my sister around because she is Ms. Makeup and keeps me in line. I don’t think a lot of us think about our skincare regimen when it comes to our makeup. This is really important to keep our skin healthy and our makeup fresh! Good stuff.

Great tips, I need to pass this on to my teen daughters. They use make up much more than I do. I keep it to a little mascara, eye liner and shadow daily.

Oooh this reminds me I have to go through and ditch some old eyeshadows and things that I use so much more rarely than the liquids and mascara! Thanks for the guidelines!

This is important! Especially about the mascara. I change that often. Thanks!
