Purple Gelish Jelly Sandwich NOTD

This is one of those manis that take forever, but the end result is worth it! This took me probably an hour and a half to do, but I loved the results. I started off with the gel base coat, followed by one coat of Gelish Starburst. Starburst is a sheer violet shade with a hint of blue flash. I’ve had this bottle for several years, and it leans more purple-pink now. Purple is an unstable pigment in a gel base, so you will almost always see fading and color changing in your purple toned gel polishes.

After Starburst, I added to coats of Tumberline Violet Gelish. Tumberline Violet is a very sheer pink base with multi colored glitters of different sizes. This is probably the most annoying gel polish in my collection. The glitter always sinks, and the base color is really thick. It works nicely if you are doing layers of different glitters though! After curing that, I did another coat of Starburst. Then I applied a coat of Water Field. This is a great clear based gel with different size silver glitter.
Next up, another coat of Starburst. Then I used Vegas Nights, which is a gorgeous holo topper. After that I applied two coats of Sledding in Style, which is a multi color and shape glitter topper from last winter’s Gelish release.

I promise we’re almost done! Just a coat of gel top coat, cure and we’re done! Needless to say, this Gelish glitter jelly sandwich was a lot of layers, so it was very strong! It held up really well, and I ended up leaving it on my nails for a week! What do you think of this mani?

Red Carpet Manicure Power of the Gem Birthstone Collection

This month Red Carpet Manicure released their Power of the Gem Birthstone collection, with a gel polish to correspond to each stone. I have swatches of Peridot (August) and Opal (October and my birthstone!) to share.
From Red Carpet Mani – Known for their powerful connection to zodiac signs, gemstones have long been revered as a jewel that evokes certain feelings and attributes when worn during its correlating month. Each shade in the collection has been carefully crafted with the finest pearls,
pigments and real genuine crushed gems to reveal brilliant color and shine. Whether you’re partial to your birthstone, or are looking to evoke wisdom or strength, the collection offers these radiant hues:

Garnet (devotion) Capricorn – deep merlot glitter
Amethyst (positivity) Aquarius – dark purple glitter
Aquamarine (courage) Pisces – light blue glitter
Pearl (sincerity) Aries –luminous white pearl
Emerald (harmony) Taurus – dark green glitter
Diamond (truth) Gemini – holographic glitter
Ruby (energy) Cancer – deep red glitter
Peridot (tranquility) Leo – lime green glitter
Sapphire (wisdom) Virgo – dark blue glitter
Opal (confidence) Libra – translucent pearl glitter
Topaz (strength) Scorpio – yellow-gold glitter
Zircon (compassion) Sagittarius – dark turquoise glitter

Peridot is described as a lime green glitter. It definitely has some gold tones to it. Personally, I feel like it is an antiqued greenish gold. Opal is gorgeous, with its milky base and fiery multi colored flecks. Much like a real opal! I have swatched it alone, but I think it will really pop when layered over a dark shade. I plan on trying it over a blackened teal or navy! I can’t wait to try a few more shades from this collection. The Garnet, Diamond, Sapphire and Zircon are calling my name!

China Glaze Gelaze Flying Dragon

ChG Gelaze Flying Dragon

I have mixed feelings about the Gelaze polishes. I have previously tested Flip Flop Fantasy, which is probably my favorite shade ever from China Glaze. What’s different about the Gelaze polish, is that the base/foundation gel is built into the color. You do, however, need to top it off with a gel top coat. One less step/coat sounds appealing. However, I find that I need 1-2 more layers of the Gelaze polish than the standard gels. Not to mention the fact that it’s not as long wearing as your 3 step gel polish process, it doesn’t save me any time.

I still get days more out of Gelaze polish that regular polish, but it’s really not as durable as a 3 step gel. Enough about the formula, what do you think of this color? I love the violet with shimmer and small blue glitter. Gorgeous! I have 4 coats on and it’s still not quite opaque. This purple polish is quite a stinker to photograph!

What do you think about China Glaze Gelaze Flying Dragon? Have you tried anything from the Gelaze line? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

China Glaze Gelaze Flip Flop Fantasy

This is my first time trying China Glaze Gelaze. It’s a new line of gel polish that has the base coat and color in one. They do make their own Gelaze top coat, but I used my Gelish Top It Off. I have good luck mixing and matching my gel polish brands, but that’s just my opinion. It’s nice to cut out a step in the gel polish routine, but I did end up feeling like my manicure wasn’t quite as strong. I had some peeling on a few nails after 4 days. Please take that with a grain of salt, because this was my first time using this formula. I’m also very rough on my nails.

This color is Flip Flop Fantasy, which is one of my favorite non gel China Glaze colors. I’m excited to have it in gel form! I found the gel formula to be a bit less streaky than the regular polish. I used 3 thin coats in the picture above. One thing to keep in mind is the shrinkage. Some gel polishes shrink back from the edges a bit during application. I could only do two nails at a time with this polish before having to cure. So, that took a little bit longer in the long run.

Overall, it’s a gorgeous color and I did like the polish. I have one additional shade from the Gelaze line to try, Flying Dragon. Sally Beauty has BOGO on these polishes thru the end of March if you are interested in trying them. ( I think they retail for about $9 or $10) Come link up your manicure with us at The Nail Files! Happy Friday!
